This year’s Autumnal Equinox Day is September 23rd, which means summer is coming to an end and autumn is coming in Japan. In Japan, people associate the season with various things, for example, autumn is associated with food because it has many seasonal food! In today’s article, I want to share some seasonal Japanese food for autumn.

Seasonal Fish

The first one is a saury. In Japanese, saury is written as 「秋刀魚」, which literally means the fish of autumn. Especially saury fished in September and October has a lot of fat which makes it even tastier! In Japan, the popular way of eating them is broiled with salt or as sashimi.

Seasonal Mushroom

Satoimo (Taro) is also popular food of autumn in Japan. Since its texture is very slippery like natto, another slippery food Japanese people like eating, some foreigners would find it gross. However, it has low calories and it improves your immunity! We boil them or grate them and eat with white rice.

Seasonal Fruit

The last one is a chestnut! As many Japanese people associate autumn with chestnuts, it is such a popular food in autumn. We roast them or eat with white rice (we eat everything with rice haha).

I’m assuming many of you are getting hungry. But make sure not to eat too much and don’t forget to stay active because autumn is also associated with sports and workout in Japan!
